Many moons ago, when I just finished the development of my South African Animal Alphabet and started selling it to the public, a lady ordered a poster for her grandchildren. About a week later, the same lady approached me again. Very sheepishly, she explained that she needed to purchase another poster, because she just couldn’t bring herself to part with the first one and give it to her grandkids as she had planned...! “I’ve put it up in my study and it brings me so much joy!” she shared.
There was no need for her to be so embarrassed. I’ve lost track over the years of how many adults buy an Animal Alphabet product as a gift from me-to-me. Some of my favourites (apart from the first time it ever happened!): A client purchased L-O-V-E in individual A4 alphabet letters for her entrance foyer. Imagine them all framed separately, welcoming guests into her home — how stunning?! Similarly, a family of four purchased the first letters of their names and the set now takes pride of place in their living room.
My cousin ordered WHY, printed on a single sheet like the Custom Alphabet Name. Displayed in his office, it’s a gentle reminder to always question your life choices; remain playfully curious; seek happiness on this journey.
And just recently, a client ordered a thank you gift for their pediatrician and NICU staff. Very special!
Yes, I created my SA Animal Alphabet for kids, hoping it would teach them something about South Africa’s amazing wildlife and inspire a love for reading. But, the fact that so many adults get a kick out of it really brings me joy! That’s the beauty of art — it speaks to different people in different ways. So what if it was meant for __________ or intended to be used as __________. If you love it, you love it!
It’s exactly for this reason that I’m dreaming up a few new SA Animal Alphabet designs, specifically for the young at heart. These prints will be print-on-demand, like my personalised alphabet products (in other words, I won’t stock them - they are specially printed only when ordered).
